iPhone gets voice dialing app

Released today is the iphone’s first voice dialing application, VoiceThisDialer . I’m just about to try it myself, but for the $9.99 price tag - they better keep to their promises:

Call any contact in your address book by voice. No training required. One tap to launch app, everything else is voice controlled. VoiceThis Dialer runs completely on your device. No sending any of your private information to servers. No need to worry about your network connection. VoiceThis Dialer is accurate and fast whether on Edge, 3G or Wi-Fi. We recommend speaking close to the iPhone mic or headset mic. Voicethis Dialer is full of useful features not common in most voice dialers: Call numbers in your recent call list Redial a contact 100% voice controlled- No push recording Confirmation on/off Even quit app by voice!

In the meantime, let me mention a couple of other options you have for voice dialing on the iphone. First came SpeechCloud’s VoiceDialer, which although free offered far too much actual manual work  to get the app to do the job. It also used the iphone’s “always on” internet feature to send the recording up to SpeechCloud’s servers for processing rather than doing it locally - which made the whole process, well, tiresome.

Secondly came Makayama’s VoiceDial, easily on of the highest priced apps in the Apple store. VoiceDial differs in that it requests you record your own voice for the contacts you plan on voice-dialing and then obviously uses that recording as it’s voice dialing method. I personally don’t mind the initial recording element, however I know a lot of people who do. MercuryNews have produced a video to show off the talents of their app & that can be found here:

update on HRL’s VoiceThis: It’s not looking good so far. I’ve updated, restarted, reinstalled - done everything I can possibly think of to get it working…and unless i’m missing something, this is not a good start for these guys. Whats worse is - I believe it’s the most I’ve spent on an iphone app - and this is the support & company website link they’ve put on their itunes app profile page: http://www.voicethis.com/ . Yep, a coming soon page… I thought it was quite a rigorous process getting on to the app store.

update2 on HRL’s VoiceThis: i have currently given in & decided i’ll have to wait for an update of some sort from HRL technologies before getting this particular voice dialing app to work. Reports from people who have managed to get it working have come in however & the reports haven’t been good. Frequent mentions of it being poor & the app calling the wrong person…shame. But it’s early days and hopefully improvements will come.
