Hi There! Hope you like the post you're about to read, if you do please consider subscribing to our rss feed...It's probably the best way to show your support for what we do.
In case you haven’t already clocked it, I’m a big web application guy. I love the idea that I can access everything from wherever I am, I love the (much) easier collaboration possibilities & I love watching the continous growth in features/possibilities online.
Anyhow, so after just seeing lifehacker’s post about a new online text editor called My Text File, I thought I’d share a list of the best online text editors out there. Of course, there’s a good chance I’ve missed a few - so I’d love to hear your thoughts too.
If you’re not bothered about using text editors online, I highly recommend Q10 or Notepad ++ for Windows and for the Mac, textmate - or click here for more great desktop alternatives .
Ok, so onto the great online text editors.
Possibly the coolest (looking) of the lot, based on the Mac’s desktop app Writeroom which I’ve mentioned before, all be it - in a more comical manner.
Dark Copy keeps things very simple. Black background, green text, full screen option, does use the browsers cache to save what you have written (although I wouldn’t rely on it) and you can save the file to your computer.
Not though of as just a text editor considering the array of features & power behind it - but don’t think twice, Google’s word process really is a fantastic online editor - and with great mobile & offline access with google gears, this is should be a real consideration.
Currently my personal favorite for it’s feature rich yet clean interface…similar to Dark Copy but much richer in features. Offers a word count, text color, background color and a bunch of other customization features.
Brand new to the market is MyTextFile & they’ve made quite an impact.
- With full screen mode, ability to login with your existing Google Account & great customization options - MyTextFile
- you need to look at before making your decision.
Part of the newly formed online Adobe Acrobat suite. Adobe buzzword is the most elegant solution, lovely fonts, sharing options - however, due to being flash based there is a slight lack of a desktop feel to it which bothers me slightly, but may be fine for you.
Other alternatives:
This section is devoted to web apps which aren’t technically text editors but can easily be used as one.
What have I missed? Do you use any online text editors or strictly desktop for you? Share your thoughts via comments & i’ll continue to add more online text editors as they’re reccommended.
